Gratitude

January 12th, 2008 by BJB

‘Someone’ handknit a richly textured, rose coloured sweater. I have no idea who the knitter was but I’m grateful that she (he) took needles in hand to create this treasure. And so are my dogs. When they see me pull it out of the closet and ease it over my head, they know we’re going for a walk. They may even realize that it’s going to be a long walk as I have chosen a sweater that will keep the cold north wind at bay for some time.

My ‘dog walk sweater’ is knit of what I am quite sure is 100% wool, in a heather rose colourway, and it’s just my size. It’s luxuriously soft and warm, loose enough to be comfortable, but not baggy. The workmanship is nearly flawless. I imagine it was made with much love and care. The only flaw is the collar. I suspect this is what relegated the sweater to the rack at my local Goodwill store, looking as if it had never been worn. The crew neck collar was much too small to fit over an average woman’s head.

Was this sweater a gift? Certainly, the knitter would have corrected the collar once she tried it on, if she had made it for herself.

Perhaps the recipient couldn’t bear to bear to injure the knitter’s feelings, so she quietly packed it in a box with other items destined for Goodwill and sent it away.

As a knitter I snapped this sweater up the moment I saw it, feeling almost guilty as I paid the $5.00 listed on the price tag. It was easy to frog the collar back to the neckline and reknit it as a loose fitting, self rolling collar, in stocking stitch.

I’m sending my gratitude out into the atmosphere to thank the maker of this sweater. Be assured that it is worn often and much appreciated by myself and my 2 Wheaten Terriers.
