10 Things To Remember When Starting A School Knitting Club

1. Start small. A 2:1 ratio (2 students per instructor) works well.

2. Have a waiting list. Once students are knitting confidently invite a few more to join.

3. Be patient.

4. Teach one skill at a time. Give students a couple of sessions to practice each new skill before adding a new one.

5. Say these words often: ” it looks great, you’re doing a great job”. Try to smile when you say it.

6. Be patient.

7. Start with simple projects such as bookmarks, headbands and wristbands for quick gratification.

8. Practice this sound with the kids: ‘rrrriiibbbiitt’. Making silly noises makes them feel better about frogging (ripping out their knitting).

9. Be patient.

10. Have fun and feel good about teaching this timeless skill to a new generation.
