Mittens

My mom made the most marvellous mittens. For 5-6 months of the year ( our winters are long) Mom had mittens on her needles for one or the other of her 5 children. Mine were always the same pattern and the same colour. She’d made me a pair of these early on and I absolutely loved them. They became my signature mitts. They were white wool with a cable running up the back of the mitts and blue cornflowers embroidered on either side of the cable. As each pair wore out she’d knit another pair exactly the same. So when I was looking for a pattern for a pair of mitts for my sister, I turned to Mom’s old pattern book. I adapted the pattern just a little: grey wool instead of white with a black fur yarn trim on the cuff, and no cornflowers.
Knitting this pattern brought back wonderful memories. I also knit these double cuff, felted mittens for my niece. The pattern can be purchased here: knit one, felt too.
These are so much fun to knit. The felting will provide thick warm protection against Winnipeg’s bitter winter winds. The inner cuffs are knit after felting and attached to the inside of the mittens to create a snug fit. I’ve made 2 pairs of these so far and have plans, and wool, for 2 more.
