Perfect Is Overrated

February 6th, 2008 by BJB

My Dog Paw Shawl is coming along beautifully, but not perfectly. The directions, from Spin Off magazine http://www.camillavalleyfarm.com/books/spinoff.htm
give just the first 20 rows or so of the pattern, in chart form, and then tell you to “continue pattern as established”. I’m a fairly experienced knitter but I haven’t had a lot of success with lace patterns, so “continue pattern as established” is somewhat of a challenge for me! My distraction driven brain has difficulty focusing on the ever changing directions and it has taken more than a few rows for my pattern to become “established’.

I considered frogging it and starting over but quickly came to the conclusion that this project was supposed to be fun and starting over would make me hate it, which really defeats the purpose.

So, I’ve decided to focus on the positives rather than the slightly askew pattern repeats, which no one but me will notice anyway.

The Dog Paws are so cute once they start showing up in the center and the 60% Corriedale fleece and 40% dog hair combination is spinning up into a soft, airy yarn with lots of bounce. When I finish knitting up a skein I can’t wait to have enough spun to knit some more, and when I’m knitting I can’t wait to get back to my spinning wheel.

I’m truly enjoying this one of a kind labour of love, imperfections and all.

Ha, I’m having somewhat the same problem with the fishnet lace pattern in my wisp (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer07/PATTwisp.html). The lace pattern got thrown off by one stitch a few rows back and I’m in the throws of a “to frog or not to frog” debate. Maybe I should take a cue from you. Also, I love the new pictures on your Flickr stream. Especially the ones of Vancouver in the summer, nice to remember what looks like without rain :)
