Shear Joy

December 19th, 2008 by BJB

“If you’ve ever dreamed about owning a little spread and caring for a few fibre-bearing beasties…” These were the words that caught my attention while listening to the recent episode of the podcast Cast-On. Brenda Dayne was referring to the book Shear Spirit, written by Joan Tapper, with photographs by Gale Zucker. I ordered the book almost immediately from Amazon and it arrived within a mere 3 days.

This book was just what I needed to get me through the last hectic week at school, before the Christmas Break. The beautiful photographs and inspiring stories of the people who produce the fibres I love to play with, were a perfect antidote to the frenetic energy building up in my classroom.

Many times over the years, during particularly trying days as a teacher, I’ve dreamt of raising a few sheep and spending my days spinning and knitting.

This notion doesn’t fit well with my current reality but I did enjoy living vicariously through this beautiful book for awhile. Check out the authors’ awesome blog at http://shearspirit.typepad.com/
