FO and Pattern

February 24th, 2008 by BJB

My self designed, alpaca stole is complete. The free pattern can be downloaded here Hestia Alpaca Stole

This stole is knit with 100% Alpaca yarn, purchased from Fibre Friends on Vancouver Island, in Canada. They can be reached at: Fibre Friends@shaw.ca . The colour is a rich, undyed, natural dark brown . This island farm produces the softest, most luxurious alpaca yarns I’ve ever encountered. Even as I cast off the last stitch of this stole I was wondering what I could knit next with their yarn… it’s so amazing to work with.

The pattern is a simple 4 row repeat throughout. I made mine on the narrower side: 46 cm.(18″) wide and 203 cm. (80″) long, allowing plenty of length for draping. You could easily make it wider by adding stitiches in multiples of 6, working 3 sts at the beginning and end of each row in garter stitch, for the border.

It could also be knit in a number of different yarns. The yarn I used is sportweight, with a tension of 26 sts to 10 cm (4″).

Please feel free to leave a comment or to contact me if you have any questions about the pattern.

I like the stole photo but was disappointed that a photo was not included in the .pdf pattern. Could/would you be able to add a photo to the pattern file? I know I would appreciate it.

Done! There are now pictures with the pattern. Thank you for your feedback.

I like this pattern, and it looks fairly simple to make. When reading your pattern, you list two Row 4 entries. Not sure which is supposed to be Row 3 — one of the purl rows or the one actually labeled Row 4. Please clarify

Thank you for noticing that Kathy. The .pdf has been corrected. All the times I checked it over I never picked that up…

No problem. I can totally relate. Thank you for the clarification.

I cannot access link for alpaca yarn you used. I see it is sport wt. yarn; could you tell me yardage & how much you used? Appreciate it!

    Hi Linda
The link for Fibre Friends is actually just an email address. They don’t have an online store. I ordered the yarn through email correspondence with ‘Janet’. I bought 2 200 gram skeins and used about 3/4 of that. I’m sorry I don’t know the yardage of the skeins but I will try to find out.

Thanx. That would be very helpful.

    Hi Linda,
the sportweight alpaca I used had about 500 yards per 200 grams (7 oz.) I used approx. 6 oz., so 850 –900 yds would be my estimate.
    Hope this helps!

Thanks for a great, easy pattern. I’m not an experienced knitter but what I do, I try to do well. I’ve always believed that simple projects can be gorgeous if you use beautiful materials. The proof is in Hestia !

How lovely! I’ve been searching the net for hours trying to find something that I can make for my Aunt who is selflessly sitting by my Uncles side in a nursing home. I was hoping to surprise her with this. She’s 80+ and hospitals and nursing homes are chilly. I’ll be using chenille single ply yarn. I hope it turns out nice.

Thanks for posting the pattern! I can’t wait to try!

I am so happy I found your pattern. I’ve made 2 of these for gifts, with Plymouth baby alpaca. I wanted a bit less knitting time so used # 10 needles & cast on 60 stitches total (9 repeats x 6, plus border). I put a ruffle on one by doing the border in 5 rows with 3x # stiches on edge. Fun and easy to knit – I only knit stuff I can do while at meetings, watching CSPAN, etc, and I look far & wide for patterns that will yield nice results without having to read charts or count (I of course use yarn loops as markers to divide all my repeats). Thank you so very much.

You’re most welcome. I love hearing about alterations made to my pattern to suit the knitter. Great idea to put the ruffle on.

Love this pattern – do you know how many yards are required to make it? Thanks !

Thanks–I’m happy you like it. I would allow for about 950-1000 yards for a generous stole, depending on how long you want it. It really is amazing in the alpaca yarn.
